Introducing the Hazel Collective
Date: Monday 10th February 2025
The Hazel Collective is a small enterprise developed out of the ongoing woods management undertaken by the brilliant work of the South Downs National Park.
It is the work of a volunteer with South Downs National Park who regularly helps with coppicing an area of hazel trees on the South Downs. This helps the forest floor recover and becomes beneficial to wildlife and nesting birds. The amount of wood that is produced from this task is immense and mostly used by the rangers of the park as stakes, in hedge laying, fencing and charcoal making.
However, some of this wood will be coming to Highdown Gardens in the form of bean poles, pea fans and supports and will be available for purchase.
As hazel grows strong and straight it is ideal for hedging, fencing, rose frames, obelisks and bean and sweet pea growing supports. Bean poles will be available in bundles of 13 at 2.4m long. Also hazel lengths and ‘whips’ of 1.8m to 2.2m and pea fans. This is truly an eco-friendly and fully sustainable product.
There will also be other products to enjoy so we hope you can visit. Starting 10th February 2025 you will find us just by the entrance.
